Which Incense Resins Should You Stock in an Esoteric Shop?

Frankincense, myrrh, benzoin and Manila copal: compare materials, packaging and practical criteria for building your shop's resin section.

To build an incense resin section, start with materials that are easy to identify and compare. Frankincense, myrrh, Sumatra benzoin and Manila copal offer four distinct options, with products already packaged for resale.

This guide compares their identities, presentation and the details useful when advising customers. It draws on Esotericæ's product listings and distinguishes trade names, botanical materials and the traditions associated with them.

To combine these products with your existing stock and organise the display, see our guide for specialist bookshops.

Four Resins to Build Your Range

A small selection helps customers understand the differences. Present the materials separately at first, then expand your range according to customer demand and restocking patterns. The scent profiles below are descriptive guides: perception varies according to the material, quantity and heating method.

Frankincense, myrrh, Sumatra benzoin and Manila copal: key differences for retailers
Material Identity to Check Scent Profile Esotericæ Packaging
Frankincense The name frankincense covers several species of Boswellia. The product listing specifies Boswellia serrata. Resinous and balsamic. Small grains, 30 g bottle; minimum pack of 3.
Myrrh A gum-resin associated with the genus Commiphora. The listing states "Myrrhae Gum. conc." without specifying the species. Warm, resinous and deeper in character. Small grains, 30 g bottle; minimum pack of 3.
Sumatra Benzoin Benzoin comes from plants of the genus Styrax. The trade name alone does not confirm a particular species. Sweet and balsamic, often described as vanilla-like. Medium-sized grains, 30 g bottle; minimum pack of 3.
Manila Copal The listing specifies Agathis dammara. This copal should be distinguished from American copals. Resinous and fresh, sometimes perceived as slightly citrusy. Medium-sized grains, 30 g bottle; minimum pack of 3.

Frankincense: Clarifying Which Incense You Mean

"Incense" can refer to a whole category of products burned for fragrance or, more specifically, to frankincense. For customers looking for raw resin, it is worth explaining this distinction on the label or advice sheet.

The genus Boswellia includes several species. The Magia Vera Frankincense Resin listing specifies Boswellia serrata, a species native to the Indian subcontinent according to Kew. That information alone does not establish the country in which a particular batch was harvested.

Keep the material and its name clearly visible in-store. Simple labelling distinguishes resin grains from sticks scented with frankincense or blends containing it.

Myrrh: A Different Gum-Resin, Not a Type of Frankincense

Frankincense and myrrh are frequently mentioned together in religious traditions, but they belong to different botanical genera. Myrrh is associated with Commiphora, while frankincense comes from Boswellia.

The product listing for Myrrh Resin describes small grains in a 30 g bottle. It does not specify the species: retain that distinction in your own descriptions rather than adding a botanical name or origin unsupported by the batch documentation.

Its warmer scent profile offers a useful comparison with frankincense. Explain the difference in material and perception, then let customers choose according to their interest in the fragrance, tradition or collection.

Benzoin: Keep the 'Sumatra' Designation

The term benzoin covers different grades and trade names. 'Sumatra benzoin' and 'Siam benzoin' should therefore not be used interchangeably on your shelves.

The Sumatra Benzoin product is supplied as medium-sized grains. The genus Styrax provides materials sold as benzoin; Kew recognises, among others, Styrax benzoin. However, this product's trade name alone does not establish that its contents belong to that particular species.

For your display, emphasise the exact name, material form and packaging. Its balsamic profile, often described as sweet or vanilla-like, is a useful reference without suggesting that the product has a standardised fragrance.

Manila Copal and American Copals: Explaining the Difference

The word copal does not identify a single botanical species. It can refer to resins from different trees and regions. A general account of Mesoamerican copal therefore does not automatically describe a product marketed as 'Manila copal'.

Esotericæ's product listing for Manila Copal Resin specifies Agathis dammara. According to Kew, this tree is native to an area extending from the Philippines to the Moluccas. This identification distinguishes the material from American copals, without establishing the harvesting country for the batch sold.

Good practice at the counter: Use 'Manila Copal' in the product name and check the stated contents. Do not assign it the origin or history of a different copal simply because the same general term is used.

From Four Materials to a Starter Selection

Based on the packaging listed, three bottles of each of these four resins would give you four product references and twelve 30 g units. This is an example of a possible starter assortment, not a sales forecast or a universal budget recommendation.

  1. Choose which materials to stock. A shop may begin with just two or three options if these better suit customer demand and the available space.
  2. Check the quantities in each listing. A product reference and a bottle are not the same unit for ordering purposes.
  3. Set aside a restocking budget. Then increase stocks of the products that find their customers.
  4. Compare the full cost of purchasing. Allow for shipping, other expenses and the overall minimum order of €200 excluding VAT.

To set your resale price, use the margin calculator including costs : calculate the cost per unit sold, then add allocated shipping, packaging and commission where applicable. You can compare VAT-inclusive prices and the effect of discounts. Trade purchase prices are available once your account has been approved.

Displaying, Storing and Advising on Resins

Group resins by name and material, with clear labels. Keep packs closed according to each product's instructions, away from humidity, excessive heat and direct light. Separate storage helps avoid confusion between grains, prepared blends and scented products.

Before a demonstration, consult the safety precautions for the product and heating equipment. Burning produces smoke: limit use, ventilate the area, use a heat-resistant holder and always supervise the heat source. Keep products out of the reach of children and animals.

Ritual uses and traditions may be presented as cultural context. They are not evidence of medical benefits or a guarantee of results. These resins are not intended for ingestion.

To expand the range gradually, explore other pure resins and distinguish them from incense blends. Our dragon's blood guide also explains how some trade names cover different materials.

The assortment builder lets you prepare a list from the Resins category and then replace or remove products according to your plans. Once you have signed in to an approved trade account, adjust quantities and budget to cost the selection before ordering.

Information to Include on a Product Advice Sheet

  • The exact trade name and botanical name where documented.
  • The form of the material and quantity per pack.
  • The usage instructions and precautions stated by the supplier.
  • The product reference and batch information needed for tracking.
  • A descriptive scent profile without promises of specific effects.

Sources and Product Verification

Packaging details are taken from the four Esotericæ product listings linked in the table. The references from Kew on Boswellia serrata, Styrax benzoin and Agathis dammara document the botanical identities mentioned. They do not certify the commercial origin of a particular batch. Kew — Commiphora myrrha describes one example of a gum-resin from that genus without identifying the batch sold. TheFrench agency Anses outlines precautions concerning indoor emissions.
