A marketplace can quickly bring traffic to a shop that is still struggling to become known. It offers an established search engine, payment infrastructure and customer trust. But it also places sellers in an environment of constant price comparisons, where the platform largely controls the customer relationship.

Marketplace visibility comes at the expense of your margin
Subscriptions, commissions, payment fees, internal advertising and fulfilment services vary by platform and product category. Calculate net margin by channel rather than comparing turnover alone.
A product that is profitable on your own website may contribute far less on a marketplace once several fees add up.
Marketplace traffic is not entirely your own audience
On your website, customers can subscribe to a newsletter, browse different product categories, return through organic search or discover your brand story. On a marketplace, the relationship is more heavily mediated by the platform and its rules. Customers can also instantly compare your product with competing offers.
Choose the right products for each channel
There is no need to list the entire catalogue. Marketplaces may suit standardised, easily compared and straightforward-to-ship products, while your website focuses on specialist ranges, gift sets, new arrivals and advice-led content.
This selection also limits stock synchronisation problems.
Compliance remains the seller's responsibility
Selling through a platform does not remove professional obligations: pre-contract information, withdrawal rights, warranties, product safety and accurate descriptions still apply according to the circumstances. Platforms themselves also face stronger transparency and safety obligations.
Measure the channel as paid customer acquisition
Calculate the full cost of every marketplace sale and compare it with the acquisition cost of an order placed on your own website. If the marketplace brings profitable, additional customers, it can be valuable. If it merely shifts existing customers to a more expensive channel, the benefit diminishes.
This complements our article on customer acquisition costs and choosing your business model.
