Opening an esoteric shop as a micro-entrepreneur: is it suitable in 2026?

Micro-entreprise, turnover thresholds, social contributions, VAT and stock costs: what to calculate before starting an esoteric shop under France's micro-entrepreneur regime.

Micro-entreprise is often the first business regime considered when opening an esoteric shop in France. Its simplicity is appealing: fewer administrative formalities, social contributions calculated on turnover received and lighter accounting requirements. But first, a common misunderstanding needs correcting: micro-entreprise is not a company, and 'auto-entrepreneur' is not a separate legal form. Micro-entrepreneurs operate as sole traders under a simplified tax and social security regime.

What the micro-entreprise regime allows in 2026

For businesses selling goods, the micro-tax regime may apply in 2026 provided the applicable thresholds are met. The turnover threshold for selling goods is 203 100 €. For services, it is 83 600 €. A shop that sells products but also offers consultations, workshops or other services must therefore track the different types of income separately.

Micro-entrepreneurs' social contributions are calculated on turnover. For the sale of goods, the rate shown by Service-Public for 2026 is 12,3 %. With no turnover, no proportional contributions are due under the micro-social regime.

The real issue for a shop: purchases and margins

An esoteric shop is not a business without expenses. It must buy stock and pay for packaging, delivery, a website, advertising, sometimes premises and furniture. Yet the micro regime does not calculate actual profit by deducting every expense. For sales activities, the tax authorities apply a standard tax allowance of 71 % of turnover to calculate the income tax base.

This means that a shop with substantial real expenses may eventually find the regime less suitable, even while turnover remains below the 203 100 € limit. Social contributions continue to be calculated on turnover, not actual retained profit.

The micro threshold is therefore not the only number to watch. For a business selling physical goods, real margins, inventory costs and VAT may become more significant than the turnover ceiling itself.

Micro-entreprise and VAT: two different thresholds

The micro regime and the VAT exemption threshold are separate mechanisms. In 2026, for sales activities, the basic VAT exemption applies subject to a threshold of 85 000 €, with an increased threshold of 93 500 €. A business can therefore remain within the micro regime while becoming liable for VAT.

While covered by the exemption, the shop does not charge VAT to customers but cannot reclaim VAT paid on business purchases. For retailers buying substantial stock, furniture or equipment, this deserves careful calculation. It is also possible to opt into VAT before being required to do so.

When can micro-entreprise work well?

It can be especially straightforward when testing a concept, starting with controlled stock, launching an online shop or validating demand without immediately taking on company formalities. It lets founders focus time and money on products, marketing and sales.

It is less convenient when a shop must finance considerable stock, sign a lease, hire staff, make major investments or operate at margins too low relative to turnover received. In these cases, sole trading under an actual-profit tax regime, an EURL or a SASU may be worth comparing.

Do not choose a regime before costing your project

Choose the legal and tax regime after completing the forecasts, not before. Before registering as a micro-entrepreneur, estimate turnover, gross margins, initial stock, potential rent, payment fees and advertising. Our guides to the opening budget, margin calculation and break-even turnover help you do this before registration.
