Buying and reselling products lets you build a range quickly and learn what customers want. Making your own products, on the other hand, can offer stronger differentiation, reinforce your brand and improve margins on certain ranges. The move from one to the other should be driven by sales data, not just the desire to create something.
Start with categories where demand is already proven
A shop should not launch its first own-manufactured range in a poorly performing category. The best candidates are categories with regular sales and returning customers where the current offer has a clear limitation: insufficient differentiation, frequent stockouts, inadequate margins or the need for more precise positioning.
Compare margins after all the new costs
Manufacturing adds prototypes, samples, production minimums, packaging, graphic design, compliance, insurance, storage and sometimes analysis or testing. A theoretically higher gross margin can therefore disappear if sales volumes are insufficient.
Putting your name on a product can change your responsibilities
The EU General Product Safety Regulation provides that a person placing a product on the market under their own name or trademark may be considered its manufacturer and take on the corresponding obligations. Additional sector-specific regulations may apply depending on the product category.
The move to an own brand must therefore be accompanied by product documentation, traceability and suitable insurance.
Start with a small test range
One or two well-launched products can teach you more than a twenty-product collection that ties up cash. Test the price, packaging, replenishment and customer response before expanding.
Protect the brand before building its value
If the brand name is intended to become a lasting asset, check its availability and consider registering it with the French National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). Registration covers specified goods and services, so you need to select the appropriate classes carefully.
