Google and product reviews: how can you get more without breaking the rules?

Asking for reviews is useful, but filtering, buying or rewarding only positive ones carries risks. Learn how to collect genuine reviews consistently.

Reviews reassure new customers, help people understand products and can strengthen local visibility. But any review strategy must remain credible: buying reviews, filtering customers or rewarding positive feedback alone damages trust and may breach platform rules.

Ask all eligible customers for reviews

The easiest way to receive more reviews is to make requesting them a normal part of the customer journey: after an order has been delivered, a few days after a purchase or once a customer service issue has been resolved. Keep the request neutral: ask for feedback on the experience, not 'a 5-star review'.

Google prohibits rating manipulation

Google's policies prohibit fake content and practices intended to artificially manipulate ratings or reputations. Do not send review links only to happy customers while preventing others from posting.

Ask for reviews, not positive reviews. Credibility comes precisely from accepting genuine accounts of customer experiences.

Make reviewing easy

Use the review request link provided by Google Business Profile, an in-store QR code or a link in the post-purchase email. The shorter the process, the higher the response rate.

Respond to negative reviews without starting a public argument

A helpful response acknowledges the issue, provides factual information and suggests a contact channel when the case needs individual attention. Avoid long defensive responses that draw more attention to the dispute than the review itself.

Product reviews serve another purpose

A product review reduces uncertainty about a specific item: size, scent, perceived quality, use or accuracy of the description. It can improve conversion on product pages but must be linked to the correct product and displayed clearly.

Measure quality, not just quantity

Track review numbers, average ratings, response times, recurring themes and, above all, repeated problems. Recurring criticism of packaging or delivery is an operational indicator, not just a reputation issue.

This work complements Google Business Profile and the second purchase.
