A French online shop can test Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain or Italy relatively easily. Commercial borders are simpler to cross within the European Union than outside it, but expansion still needs structure: VAT, shipping, customer service, languages and product selection can rapidly change an order's profitability.
Start with one or two markets, not four at once
Treat each country as a market to test. Analyse unsolicited orders you have already received, search queries, delivery costs and products that ship well. Belgium and Luxembourg may be linguistically easier for a French-speaking business; Spain and Italy require more localisation to achieve good conversion rates.
The first objective is not to translate the entire catalogue. It is to make a few strong product categories genuinely easy to buy, understand and receive.
VAT: the EU-wide 10 000 € threshold
For intra-EU distance sales of goods to consumers, a combined threshold of 10 000 € excluding VAT applies under certain conditions. Above this threshold, VAT is generally due in the country of destination. The OSS one-stop shop allows businesses to declare and pay VAT due on relevant distance sales in different EU countries through a single member state.
This is an EU-wide combined threshold, not a separate threshold for each country. A shop selling 6 000 € in Belgium and 5 000 € in Spain can therefore exceed it even though neither country individually reaches 10 000 €.
Shipping must be profitable in each country
Shipping costs, failed deliveries and returns can vary. A single 'Europe' rate often conceals significant differences. Calculate free-shipping thresholds or zone-specific rates with your average transaction value in mind.
Heavy, fragile or liquid products need separate testing. A range that is profitable in France may be less attractive when shipping accounts for too much of the order value.
Localise the pages that genuinely affect purchases
Start with navigation, category pages, best-selling product listings, delivery information, returns and transactional emails. Basic machine translation may be enough to explore traffic, but it becomes inadequate once the market starts generating consistent sales.
Adapt the range without rebuilding the catalogue
The same categories do not necessarily perform equally everywhere. Use sales data to strengthen the product families that find customers in each country instead of mechanically duplicating the French selection.
European expansion should therefore be approached as a sequence of small, profitable tests. Connect it with your e-commerce strategy and your free-shipping threshold.
