Santería, also known as Regla de Ocha or Lucumí, is an Afro-Cuban religion that originated in Cuba between the 17th and 19th centuries. It developed within the Yoruba communities deported from West Africa, primarily from present-day Nigeria and Benin, who preserved their beliefs despite slavery and religious prohibitions. To preserve their practices, initiates gradually associated their deities, the Orishas, with certain Catholic saints, giving rise to the syncretism characteristic of Santería. This religion is not a mere juxtaposition of African and Christian traditions, but a complete spiritual system with its own theology, initiation rites, ceremonies, divination, and clergy. Researchers such as Lydia Cabrera, David H. Brown, and Joseph M. Murphy have extensively documented its history, evolution, and the richness of its cultural heritage, which is now recognized as a major element of Cuban religious heritage.
The practice of Santería is based on the relationship between human beings, the Orishas, and Olodumare, the supreme God of the Yoruba tradition. Each Orisha represents a force of nature and an aspect of human life, such as justice, the sea, lightning, fertility, paths, or healing. Ceremonies include offerings, chants in the Lucumí language, sacred drumming, prayers, ritual baths, consecrated objects, and divinatory consultations carried out notably using cowrie shells (diloggún) or, for authorized priests, the Ifá system. Santería also places great importance on plants, which are considered to carry a sacred energy essential for purifications, blessings, and consecrations. Still very much alive in Cuba, it spread in the 20th century to the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and several Latin American countries, where it continues to be practiced and transmitted according to its initiatory lineages.
